About PFSAQ

Parents, Families and Friends of South African Queers

"It is through the young LGBTIQ that we get the family members bridging generational gaps."

The emergence of Parents, Families, and Friends of South African Queers (PFSAQ) in 2013 was a response to identified gaps and opportunities within the LGBTIQ sector in South Africa. Initial conversations between three activists highlighted the need for support for young LGBTI individuals in their coming out process, leading to the creation of Allies and Friends support groups, as well as support from LGBTI parents.

Through informal meetings and collaborations with existing initiatives, PFSAQ gained momentum over the years, with a dedicated team of volunteers leading the organisation. In July 2017, PFSAQ received its first grant from the Other Foundation, allowing it to focus on mobilising parents, families, and friends of LGBTI individuals and empowering them to advocate for equality, dignity, and social inclusion.

Vision

Our vision is to be an influential and impactful organisation of parents, families, friends or allies advancing the freedom, equality, dignity and inclusivity of LGBTIQ persons within our societies.

Mission

Our mission is to mobilise, inform, and support the development of public advocates against violence, discrimination, and hate targeted at LGBTIQ individuals.
